Sand the hole lightly to remove any accumulated dirt, clean with
pressurized air and fill the hole with the gel coat repair material. Let dry, sand
smooth and repeat if necessary until the hole is filled. When finished you
will be hard pressed to find the repair. Do not use acetone to clean the area
as it eats gel coat.

Many thanks to you both! Rummy's 2nd message got cut off.

Yes, this is a small but deep chip. It's a bit ragged at the surface edge.
Will it be enough to sand it into a smoother edge, so that the new
fiberglass and the original gelcoat abut each other? Then sand the glass smooth
and recoat it using a gelcoat repair kit? Or should I sand off a larger
circle of gelcoat around the hole?

Thanks Rummy!
Yes, now that i look back at the size of this i agree. My plan would be
for a larger defect.
Paint however is a key part of upgrading and refurbishing. Two part
LPU's
are used by stan on old R22's and are just the ticket for sprucing up
faded dull scratched gel-coat.
