[Rhodes22-list] Ballast ?

Hi John
I too am new to sailing. I bought my rhodes 2 years ago and was suprised at
how tippy it seemed.
I live on a inland lake in michigan with gusty and varriable wind, the only
thing constant about the wind is change.I was quite concerned when a gust
would hit and the heel angle increased rapidly. i never went out if the
gusts wer over 17 mph (good local private weather station) and then so
reefed that we didnt go very fast.
Late last summer my son, after listening to all this "wind concen" and the
theoretical "they say she wont go over" comvinced me to remove anything
loose from the cabin and go out to attempt to bury the rail.
with empty water tank in our 86 and a 22 knt wind, pretty steady for
michigan, we went out reefed. after a while we read our speed with an i
phone app my son Keith has at 3 knots. "More sail dad" then 5 knots and a
lot of heel but only about 15 degrees "more sail dad", we wound up at 7 knts
on his app and as we approached the rail i had to steer away from the wind
as hard as i could to keep her from rounding up
the my sun came partly down from the rail where he had been perched and into
the wind she went, no stopping her we did this repeatedly . with no
significant waves (smallish lake) 22 knts 180 genny all out
we couldent get our feet wet no matter how hard we tried.I am now MUCH more
comfortable with a bit of heel you gotta try it!
