His lines may have shrunk to the point that he couldn't completely unfurl
the main and he decided that selling the boat to you was easier than
replacing the outhaul line.

Both my mainsail and Genoa furling lines keep shrinking a little each year
and I wonder if I'll eventually need to replace them.  I wet and stretched
my Genoa furling line and tightly wrapped it around my bulkhead handhold,
which is how I store it anyway.  Didn't bring it back to its original length
but definitely helped.
