Well we finally got Ozone launched this Sunday. The weather up at Sandusky
BAy on Lake Erie was very nice. I got the mast up with the help of Stan's
wonderful mast crane. Quality equipment, BTW! I'm am not sure if I have the
shrouds tightened correctly or not. At least the mast is straight with no
bends.
Motoring from the ramp to the marina took about 30 minutes. The tiller felt
like I was handling a semi-truck; took much effort to steer, not sure why.
It wasn't hanging up on anything. Bilges dry. No problems there.
The really disappointing part was getting her into her slip. She didn't
respond to the tiller very well and I ended up on the rocks. Fortunately,
the bilges are still dry. The rudder has portions of paint missing, but
other than that I see no damage to it. The diamond board hit the rocks,
too, but still functions ok. I was going very slow, BTW. I guess I just
need to get used to the boat and practice, practice and practice some more.
I had the marina move me to a slip away from the rocks and more room to
maneuver. I feel very foolish and could kick myself for blemishing my sweet
girl.
Part of my problem was trying to move the motor and tiller in the same
direction to make sharp turns. The motor handle is blocked by the motor
mount. I tried making turns without moving the motor but the turns were not
sharp enough to get into the slip with the space I had. I don't know if you
could give me suggestions.
If there are any Rhodies in the area of Sandusky Ohio, I would like to ask
if someone could take a look at my mast rigging to see if I did it right.
I will learn, I just hope not to do it at the expense of my sweet girl. I
looked real foolish in the marina; not on the lake where I did just fine of
course.
I agree with Stan in his owner's manual - his method and equipment is idiot
proof, the boat that is not necessarily the person at the helm.

Ron,
With the IMF, you just need to hand tighten the shrouds. An extension for
your motor tiller will help you maneuver the boat in the marina.

The odd behavior of the boat is just that, odd. Did you have the Rudder all
the way down (vertical) and secured with the line so it would not work its
way up? The boat should turn on a dime even using only the rudder.
Curious.

Make sure the rudder is down as far as it goes, it is even a little bit
forward. It wilhandle like a sports car. Elton pointed that out to me years
ago. I will turn on a dime.

I agree with Chris...I doubt the rudder blade was completely down.

Hey guy,
Everyone has some rocky days. I have sometimes found motor and rudder at
cross-purposes, especially if I want to be in a hurry. Just work at being
slow and deliberate, always watching for the potential "escape" from danger.
The labored rudder control has me stumped. Be mindful of the position of
the rudder blade. If not vertical and fully down it will become tough. If
you let it be in the near-horizontal position, steerage will be nearly
impossible. This may have been the issue. Of course, if the blade is not
fully down, it will compete with the prop, and it will lose the contest...
If you send a picture of the transom from in back, I may be able to suggest
a simple rudder to motor linkage. The sailing season is young!
Best to you,
Art
Have a nice day!

The rudder responds best when deployed fully down to the point where the
rudder blade is partially forward of the pivot point for the rudder.

Let's try this again,
Hello all here is my humble solution to the Bimini. Materials include a
8'X10' tarp 5 1/2" PVC poles 10' long 6 90* Ells 12 45* Ells 4 1/4 X 2"
eyehooks and a dozen bungie cords. Place 3 PVC poles in 8' pickup bed and
leave in sun for a week. Loops for tarp can be made on a standard sewing
machine. Assemble according to picts provided and you'll figure it out. The
overhang is good for rainy nights. This Idea could also work with a 10' X
10' kitchen fly to cover the whole cockpit and provide insect cover.

I had a similar problem when I took Second Wind out for the first time
solo. I have the attachment connecting the tiller to the motor. My
problem was that the motor handle in the down position was blocked by
the motor mount (as you pointed out). I raised the motor handle to a
straight upright position and that solved the problem. It did take a
while to figure out what was limiting the tiller. Had there been rocks,
I would have been on them. I now check to see if the motor arm is up
before I back out of the slip. I hope your solution is this simple. Joe

Subject: [Rhodes22-list] Launched Ozone Ouch!
Well we finally got Ozone launched this Sunday. The weather up at
Sandusky
BAy on Lake Erie was very nice. I got the mast up with the help of
Stan's
wonderful mast crane. Quality equipment, BTW! I'm am not sure if I have
the
shrouds tightened correctly or not. At least the mast is straight with
no
bends.
Motoring from the ramp to the marina took about 30 minutes. The tiller
felt
like I was handling a semi-truck; took much effort to steer, not sure
why.
I guess I just
need to get used to the boat and practice, practice and practice some
more.
I had the marina move me to a slip away from the rocks and more room to
maneuver. I feel very foolish and could kick myself for blemishing my
sweet
girl.
Part of my problem was trying to move the motor and tiller in the same
direction to make sharp turns. The motor handle is blocked by the motor
mount. I tried making turns without moving the motor but the turns were
not
sharp enough to get into the slip with the space I had. I don't know if
you
could give me suggestions.
If there are any Rhodies in the area of Sandusky Ohio, I would like to
ask
if someone could take a look at my mast rigging to see if I did it
right.
I will learn, I just hope not to do it at the expense of my sweet girl.
I
looked real foolish in the marina; not on the lake where I did just
fine of
course.
I agree with Stan in his owner's manual - his method and equipment is
idiot
proof, the boat that is not necessarily the person at the helm.

I understand this to be correct, now. I will take care of the situation
when I visit Ozone next time. I'm glad no one was there to watch. I felt
real stupid. I guess I won't be the last guy to run aground. I did had the
marina move me to a slip that is not so tight in which to maneuver. Very
little room for Ozone to get in. The folks in the marina are some of the
nicest I have every met. The managers and staff are fantastic. Best
customer service I have seen in a long time.
I posted some photos of the launch day on Flicker. I really had a good time
out on the lake. My family really loves Ozone. My daughter has downs
syndrome and she simply loves being out on the boat. Our standard poodle
really seemed relaxed as well. Her first time on a boat.
