Chris,
I've now doubt of the following regardless of the material selected :
The lighter the color the longer the life of the material's integrity .
Overtime, both require seam sealant reapplication to maintain water
resistance. Whatever material selected, intense, daily exposure to
sunlight and
salt significantly increase the development of their aging. Therefore, if
daily use in an intensely "abusive" environ is required , I would pay the 6
to
8X cost increase per yard for the lightest color , heaviest weight
Sunbrella available, rather than ripstop spinnaker cloth.

I do like the idea of the lightweight and durability, the stuff is bullet
proof. I was thinking of sun protection for my son's old boat down in
Mexico. The sun is a killer on the Sea of Cortez. He and some friends are
restoring the boat and a sun shade is one thing they will need.

Hi Chris,
I'm sorry I fail to recall the SPF .... perhaps because it was and is the
material of choice due to all it's other characteristics.... however that
new carbon fiber/kevlar stuff although costing much should have an SPF
that
is out of sight. This UV treated Rip stop nylon is the stuff that is
used
in most of those hot air balloons.... talk about abuse.... roaring
propane
flames along with the Sunny days... Their pilots are required to do
puncture/pressure like testing .... so they get to make a controlled crash
rather
than a crash. If sunbrella was a dollar or two a yard, I would probably
consider it... for a bimini or sail cover.... I find that I tend to use
the
bimini for maybe 30% of my sailing, usually when anchored, rain showers,
or
delicate "rail meat" ... the nature of the material makes it easy to
stow,
and depending on the color selected , it's translucency and UV lifespan
is
variable.

I recall somewhere that the SPF of that material is very low. Does
anyone
know what it is? I know the fabric itself has been treated to stand up
to
the UV but what kind of protection does in provide? Just curious.

Hi Rummy!
Perhaps you or some of the other Rhodes Owners would be interested in
exploring the use of new, UV treated Rip-stop nylon spinnaker cloth ,
translucent, various colors and wts. for this or other uses. Sunbrella
is
opaque, and would have a greater life span.... HOWEVER, my price is less
than 10% the cost of sunbrella per yard. If it is used for just periods
of
boat use, it should be as durable as a moderate/heavy wt. spinnaker. I
also have light wt. spinnaker cloth available, for sails, wind breakers,
bags, etc..
If anyone is seriously interested they could contact me for samples of
material, color, wt, solid brass grommets, etc... .
