[Rhodes22-list] Bilge Water

Hi David
This is not good! Your boat should be completely water-tight and the bilge
should almost dry even after a rollicking sail. There should certainly be
no gaps between the hull and deck. I am working on a 1984 R22 and I have
noticed the hull/deck join needs to be re-caulked. The only way to do this
thoroughly is to remove the old rub-rail (drill out the rivets), clean out
the old caulk and re-caulk with a new rub-rail.
This sounds quite radical, but it is something a handy man can do. I am
doing mine in sections (I don,t want to drill out all the rivets in one go
as the deck/hull join could shift) of about 25% at one time. Once I get rid
of the old rub-rail, I shim open the joint and scrape out as much of the
old caulk as I can get to. I then squirt a generous quantity of 3M 5200
caulk into the joint, clamp the joint and pop-rivet the new rub rail on
(also making sure the 5200 is in the rivet holes)..
I am using Barbor 1 1/2" Black Plastic Rigid Rub-rail base...it's not
Aluminum, so it can be sent via normal UPS.. Your old insert might work in
this base. I bought mine on eBay for $95 for a 70' roll.
All the best
