The rope rubbing against the fibreglass will certainly damage it and repairs
are far more trouble or costly than the price of chocks.

I have the same hardware as Graham and it has actually caused wear on my
lines.  It could be user error but I'm not sure how the line sliding through
the chock would prevent less wear than sliding over smooth fiberglass.
