James:
Nice job. Thanks for the pictures. What year is your boat? You seem to have a fibreglass hull liner in the fore cabin. Mine does not
In my boat (1976) the form was poured in place and definitely seems to be stuck down - although I wonder if it would break loose if the boat actually filled with water. I have attached the best picture that I have that was taken during deconstruction with the bulkheads removed.. There is a lot of irrelevant junk in the picture but you can clearly see the foam as a solid single piece.
I wonder whether anything holding it in place other than the adhesive qualities of the foam?
Are you planning to reinstall flotation and if so, how do you intend to do it?
Graham

If your foam is like my foam, then it isn't attached.
I cut out the forward v-berth and in the three compartments underneath there was simply blocks of Styrofoam stuffed in there. Beings that it was about 10 degrees out when I did it, and the boat had been flooded for a while before I got it, some of my Styrofoam blocks weighed in over 10 lbs a piece.
The first picture is with the V-berth cut out and only one of the bulkheads still in place. The plastic bag to the right is full of the old Styrofoam. (the white on the right side of the bag is glare from the sun coming in through a porthole.

The second picture shows the interior cleaned out. I have not removed the "backrest" portion of the interior liner.

Lou plans to strengthen his hull and I was considering the same since I havethe interior of my 76 completely stripped out. It seems like the opportunetime to do so if it is worthwhile and if I had some idea of what was needed. It would only be feasible to do the main cabin and possible the forward areaif I remove the foam. I am not sure how the foam is held in place and how Iwould reattach it.Has anyone done this or do they have any technical thoughts about how manylayers of fibreglass should be added? Is it really worth the effort? The reasons I am thinking about this is that I understand that later boatshave a heavier layup and I assume there was a good reason for that andbecause the hull seems overly flexible and has taken a dent where theforward starboard strut of the trailer presses on the hull. I jacked theboat up about 2 years ago and most of the dent has come out, but I thoughtthat some strengthening - perhaps with strengthening ribs of some sort mightbe prevent the impression from forming again when the boat is lowered backon the bunk. I would value thought from those who might know more about whether and/orhow to proceed.-----Original Message-----From: rhodes22-list-bounces at rhodes22.org[mailto:rhodes22-list-bounces at rhodes22.org] On Behalf Of Lou RosenbergSent: December-20-13 1:24 PMTo: rhodes22-list at rhodes22.orgSubject: Re: [Rhodes22-list] Centerboard replacement.James,I renovated my '81 centerboard trunk and mechanism. While its a totallydifferent design than what you have in front of you, I recommend trying tore create what Stan had in that era of R22s. Try to create a two piece (cap and flange ) system with a recessed "V" inside your trunk to hold thepivot pin.If for some reason you have no access to pics of this, I can supply somedirectly to you.I have documented my renovation in the Owner's site in the section undertechnical details I believe.Roger Pihlaja did most of the writing on the structural details of thecement and glass work. I followed his online instructions and did the jobalone. I took one year of hard labor but it was worth it. Since then I vere lined my centerboard cap and flange with Garolite (1/4") to make a firmseal. I have not had any issues since but am very curious to know how faryou took your restoration of the hull.I plan to add stringers under my cockpit and remove the fwd foam to alsostrengthen the glass from inside my boat. I had a major issue with boat poxwhich resulted in small hull leaks.Good luck with your endeavor.Lou Rosenbergs/v MiraclesMill Basin Bklyn NY--View this message in context:http://rhodes-22.1065344.n5.nabble.com/Centerboard-replacement-tp47311p47330.htmlSent from the Rhodes 22 mailing list archive at Nabble.com.__________________________________________________To subscribe/unsubscribe go tohttp://www.rhodes22.org/mailman/listinfo/rhodes22-listFor the list Charter and help with using the mailing list and archives go tohttp://www.rhodes22.org/list__________________________________________________---This email is free from viruses and malware because avast!
