Thanks for taking and posting the pictures. Pretty much what I do but it's good to have this documented.
Yes, the chains are really what makes this happen. They allow the forward inners to remain connected (they are too short w/o the chains) and as they tighten up, they pull the mast back to the center position as it approaches the mast crutch. - rob
