[Rhodes22-list] Salt Water Rhodes

Hi Alice,
When you flush an outboard - either with ear muffs or a flushing port
- it sends fresh water through the cooling passages that are usually
cooled by the water intake when the motor is running. If you run an
outboard in salt water, salt can accumulate in these passages. I
suspect it is not as much of a problem for larger engines (larger
passages) or motors that are run everyday. The difference between the
earmuffs and the flushing port is that with the earmuffs (or if you
run the outboard in a barrel of fresh water), you run the outboard
and the water pump moves the fresh water through the passages. With
the flushing port on the Yamahas, you hook up the hose to the port
with the engine off. The water pressure from the hose moves the water
through the passages.
