Dennis:
I am in the process of painting the deck and cockpit of my boat and would be
very interested to learn what product you will be using and, if you are
doing the painting yourself, whether you will be using the roll and tip
method or spray.
I have been experimenting with the System Three system of LPU as it is
essentially non toxic. See
http://www.systemthree.com/store/pc/Paint-Varnish-c6.htm .This makes home
spraying feasible as I don't need the extensive containment and air control
that the other more hazardous systems require. So far I have painted only
the hatches and pop top which I was able to do last winter in my basement.
I am very happy with the outcome although it is somewhat different from the
traditional high gloss of the other paints. This one comes out with a satin-
matte finish although you can get a high gloss clear finish as a top coat if
you want that. Personally, I like the matte finish for the deck. The other
nice thing about the System 3 paint is that while it is an epoxy it is also
waterborne. When sprayed, the water evaporates in about 30 minutes allowing
the boat to be recoated almost immediately. It then takes about 2 weeks for
the epoxy to harden completely but throughout that time the surface is dry
to the touch. I spray painted mine with a cheap HVLP sprayer - sold by
Rockler for about $130. See: http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=10469 .
I actually managed to pick mine up in Canada from a supply house that was
having a clear out of discontinued items for only $35. I had never spray
painted before and although I had to sand and repaint a few times to get it
right I think that I will have sufficient confidence to take on the boat.
The trick appears to be to apply very light coats which, with the fast
re-coat times, is very feasible. It was my intention to do the rest of the
deck this summer but health problems will delay that for another year.
I would be interested to know what experiences and techniques others have
used.

I have a hull number GBX 220 built 06-30-974. I am getting her ready for new
urethane paint which means I have to sand 2 coats of paint off the hull
above the water line. I am also going to urethane the cabin top and cockpit
as there are lots of places with damage that have been repaired that will
not look good without a new coating. The cabin is partially finished with
new stringers, sole, bench and compression post. I plan to finish the cabin
later but want to get some sailing in this season to get a feel for her.
Sincerely,
Dennis Frappier

I have not seen anyone identify a boat older than mine since I have been on
the list. It is a 74, hull 244 and yes, it was called the Rhodes Continental
back then. I would be curious to know why "continental" was dropped from the
name. I also think it might be the only R22 in Canada.

Nice to hear that there are still some'76's like my old one still out there.
Hey I wonder, who has the oldest Rhodes? (that would be a "Continental" I
think). I know that there is at least one '74. Who out there has a more
vintage one?

Hi guys. I'm also a 76 Rhodes owner with a hull id # GBX220078N76. I'm in
Winston-Salem, NC. Am also going to try to go from wire to bar & car
traveler at some time, perhaps when I redo all of the standing rigging.
Have had my hands full with fixing centerboard trunk leak (fixed now, thank
goodness), trailer bunk repairs and reupholstering the cabin cushions.
"Jaws" is finally starting to look better than some of the other poor
neglected boats at the marina. Now if I just had a larger lake
nearby..Since trailer is secure now I may try to get up to Smith Mtn. Lake.
Have a good/safe 4th everyone.
