[Rhodes22-list] Centerboard top glassed in?

Thanks. Good to know. That would make removal easier. Mine never had a
gasket - it was glassed over and had some very tenacious sealant. I didn't
know Stan supplied such a thing.

Graham,
Straight from the horse's mouth (Stan) never use silicon or any sealant on
the centerboard cap gasket. The ONLY material to use is a new neoprene
gasket which can be purchased from Stan or buy some material from an
industrial supply store and make you own. NO SEALANT.

Yes, that is a bummer and something that happened to me when I had the
bright idea that 1/8" high density foam might make a good gasket. Nope! You
want carefully applied silicone, (but not so much that it squeezes inside
and clogs up the pulleys for the centreboard line), good gasket material
and lots of bolts as the fibreglass flange does not distribute the pressure
very well.
When I took the cap off the glass flange was so thin it broke so I had to
add some layers of cloth and epoxy to mend it. Doing so also made the cap
and the flange much more rigid and if you have the same problem it might be
worth doing the same. It doesn't need to be a fancy job. If you put down a
layer of epoxy thickened with the high density adhesive filler and then
apply the cloth while the filler is still soft you can fill in the rough
spots and provide a surface without gaps for the cloth to lay out on.
Hopefully, that won't be necessary.
Good luck,
Graham

This is a followup from a while back. Sorry to report that when I floated
the boat there were about 5 dripping areas around the gasket. I left the
boat at the nearby boat yard and they are going to remove the rivets and
take the top off and then we will see what it looks like. I am obviously
bummed not to be sailing but on the other hand seeing how this boat is
almost 40 years old I wouldn't mind knowing a new gasket and bolts are in
place.
I went back thru the thread and looks like a lot of good advice on how to
proceed.
