I strengthened the cockpit seats by running 1" aluminium square tubes under
the front of the seats fore and aft to brackets attached to the bulkheads. I
did it just because the unsupported span seemed to be very long and there
was a tendency sometimes for people to jump down from the coach roof or side
decks and the flex of the seats bothered me. I am not sure how well it works
or even if it was necessary but it gives me some peace of mind.

On Stan's suggestion, I added a compression post.  Sailing Inc. later
confirmed my work with Stan.  They also stiffened the cockpit seats and the
attachment of the seats to the bulkheads at both ends.

You have to realize the R22 is ideal for cruising with adults that weigh
less than 200# each.  I weigh a little more than 200#, although I keep
trying not to.  Plus, I often go out with even bigger guys who like to race
and the rougher the better.
