I also have the old style furler and before I decided to chuck it I made some
mods to allow me to remove the sail without dropping the mast. If I ever get
out on the water (centerboard gasket) I'll post some pics of it in action. I
can see how the old system is somewhat hard on the forestay. But probably
should replace that anyway at least every 10 years.  That is not too easy on
the old system as the plastic sections will be hard to remove. And of course
a rigger will want to put in a new system
