Hi Mike,
Here are my thoughts on the subject.
1. I've never hear of an R22 mast coming down in a blow. Based on my
own experience, leverage mistakes when raising the mast are much more
common. All you need to do is forget to put the poptop/boom slider in
the up position or slide the poptop/cpmpanionway slide closed and you
create a leverage point that can be damaged if you don't notice it.
If you just use the screws the fix is easy and the leverage points
don't get damaged. (hear the voice of experience - we were glad there
were screws there.)
2. As everyone else has said the stays are more than sufficient to
keep the mast up. Even boats that have been rolled in a microburst
(there is one account somewhere in the archives) or damaged in a
hurricane, don't have the mast come down as you are envisioning. The
mast may stick in the mud and get damaged, chainplates may pull but
the mast doesn't go flying. For that to happen you would have to have
2 and maybe 3 stays/chainplates go simultaneously.
3) If the above happened and the mast did go flying it would be just
as deadly with a chunk of fiberglass attached to it. The leverage of
the mast is such that if the stays go the bolts won't help much -
might as well be screws.
Best,
Mary Lou
