great idea. have sailed bigger boats, 28-44 to atlantic/pacific coasts from
lake ontario over the last 40 yrs +.
oddly both l and some merchant sailors have always commented on how rough
the geat lakes can be. long/narrow fetches over deep water makes for a steep
wave with short peroids. so rather than long rollers you get a nasty chop
thats makes a hobby horse of a 30 .footer. that being said, its wind speeds
are 1/2 the oceans avg so l love it, especially the fresh clear water.
much prefer the beauty of it all to the north sea or gulf stream, as it will
be a flat calm within 6=8 hrs of a blow, no real residual swell so the
summers are hot, lazy and peacfull minus the odd blow. wind here every
afternoon like the sea of cortez but no sharks/rays.
just came back from edenton where l'm keeping a old R22 stan sold me, have
an old aquarius 23 here on the bay of quinte. kinda similar with a
keel/board but seems to be less of a sea boat than the r22, lighter rig etc.
fyi last nov bouys recorded 17-19 footers, too cold for me but have know
guys to sail into dec, crazy.
http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=45012 is 20 miles south
of my place overlooking the lake opposite rochester ny.
sorry for the long missive,
peter
r22 cool change
