Yep, whenever there's a problem with the car, I first check to make sure it
wasn't caused by a loose nut behind the wheel.

Sigh, it was an ID Ten T problem. Spelled another way: ID10T.
After trying several times on various days, hatch suddenly came down
properly. Discovered handles were loose and tightened and now locks securely
and with no gap. Just in time for rain.
