There were several good answers posted and all were correct. The BIG booboo 
 that I saw was the rudder position. I can imagine that you were fighting 
the  tiller all day because the rudder was not in the down position and I 
know you  were in at least twenty feet of water so water depth wasn't the 
problem. Give me  an invite and I would love to spend a couple of hours with you 
out on the lake.  (I will even bring the rum) Perhaps I can show you a few 
tricks on how to sail  solo without a lot of work.
