There is ten years between the builds of our boats, maybe Stan had one
come back with a hole punched thru the cb cap. Maybe a previous owner
pulled the cb cap and saw a skuff on the cb cap gasket and said...I'll
put a stop to this bullstuff and put the bracket in. Who knows? I went
with it being part of Stan's constantly upgrading. I made the new bracket
3/4" up from 1/2" UHMWPE (thanks Hank ) and cut the V a little smaller to
leave more uhmwpe in the failure area.
The two things I can think of that would cause this abuse are trailering
on rough roads and being on a mooring. I wouldn't tear apart a good
sealed cb assembly, but next time your in there for maintainance, check
and see if the cb and cb cap have been making a habit of trying to occupy
the same space.

Interesting. My 76 does not have such a bracket. ( What does "uhmp" stand
