Ric:

My CB cap broke in about the same place as you describe when I was removing
it. I have no idea why it would break while installed, but in the case of my
cap it was quite thin in that area and I suspect that a heavy object falling
on the cap, such as a floorboard, might be sufficient to crack it. I beefed
mine up quite a bit before I reinstalled it.

The CB line for my boat is 12' long and looks like 5/16 diameter braided
nylon. I am virtually certain that this was the original line as the cap had
been installed with a fibreglass sheet over it and sealed with some very
tenacious caulking and , as I recall, rivets. Getting the cap off was very
difficult - hence it was broken in the process. Once I had rebuilt the cap
as well as the base which had been badly damaged during the removal of the
cap, I reinstalled the cap with stainless bolts rather than screws

mast step cb leak

OK
Now you have my attention.
I have an '86 recently inherited from my dad.
The CB trunk developed a leak mid summer 2013 that got worse until I hauled
it in November.
The cap is cracked about 6" aft of the forward end and water leaks up
through the cap constantly.
The screws for the cap have SS washers on them from the forward end, about
12 inches back and no washers on the rest.
I have never had it apart so I don't know what it looks like, but I have to
repair the cap and I want to replace the CB line as well.
Any hints on what might have casued the cap to crack?
What type and size line to use for the CB?
Thanks
Ric
