[Rhodes22-list] Major Problem Minor Repair

James:

I re-cored my foredeck completely and strengthened the side decks a few
years back. The core on my boat was plywood - interior grade I think - and
all of the plies had come apart. I replaced it with marine grade plywood - 3
or 4 layers of 1/8 inch all sealed in epoxy. It is a big job that in turn
leads to all sorts of other jobs like a complete paint job, but it is good
to not have to worry about the core anymore. Once the keel is fixed I will
focus on the interior and reinstall the deck hardware. Open heart surgery
last year set me back on my so called "timetable". I hope to finish in the
summer of 2015. But don't tell my wife. She takes these estimates as an
absolutely solemn promise so I let her think it will never finish. It is
easier for us both that way.

Graham

Sounds like you have as much work as I have Graham. Just finished ripping
out the rotted area for the fore deck a couple of days ago, cut out the
inner skin of the fiberglass and all the wet balsa wood core. Yesterday, I
made a template for the port side edge of the area so that I can start going
back with the insert that I am going to put back in that area. Today I will
make my Starboard side template and try and get the fore and after templates
made as well, the weather is gorgeous today but a lot of work came in as
well, and I'm in the work when you can play when you can't business right
now.. so looks like work may be the priority.

James

Chris:

You asked why I rebuilt my rudder. I am doing a complete rebuild of my boat.
Part of that rebuild was to restore the rudder and centreboard. Both were
damaged through abrasion, osmosis and various nicks and bangs. They are,
after all, 35 years old. The fix consists of removing blisters, filling the
holes and scratches with epoxy fillers, fairing the outside with epoxy and
fairing powder and then coating with multiple coats of epoxy with aluminium
powder before coating with anti-fouling paint. The centre board also had a
lot of hollow areas that I filled with epoxy.

Hey Graham
Hear you loud and clear...perhaps some kind of friction clamp that you would
set the friction enough to hold the rudder down while sailing, but a strike
would let it slip. Thumb screw or wing nut...think my Continental had
something like that... Not elegant but it works...

Why did you have to rebuild the rudder?

For me, I just take a loose wrap of the up haul line around the cleat and
quickly release it when I start to touch bottom and leave it to spring free.

Please let me know if you find something that works well...
Chris
