True, they prevent side to side movement, but also prevent the CB from
hitting the cap in certain conditions, i.e. CB down - backing up and
hitting the bottom, or CB up and running aground. With the CB up, if
the CB hit something, a rock for example, that could force it up past
the bottom of the trunk, it would hit the cap.
