Thanks to you who have responded. A new yamaha 9.9 cost $2700 (MSRP $3900) plus cost of adaptation of new controls. 

I have found on line new yamaha long block assemblies available for $1250 plus install at about $400. This seems like my best option. My outboard is a 2000 and is generally OK. Problem is loss of compression due to many corrosion stress cracks in major engine housings.
