On our second R22, 16+ years. Sold first to move to a Tartan 37. I should have stored the first R22 as five years later we sold the T37 and needed another R22. I fitted both with the Yamaha 9.9 long shaft high thrust engines. Why? While over kill, the few times a year we head out into the Atlantic, it is nice to have the power to fight the tides into and out of the inlets. Also a few times caught out in an unexpected thunder storm on the inter coastal or on the St. Lucie River we needed the power to get home or to a place of refuge.

Other times I've sailed from out in the Atlantic through the inlet, crossed "the crossroads" of the inter coastal and the river, through some tight turns, and all the way to the railroad bridge where a motor is essential. My point, I learned to sail on boats without motors. I hate them! But when you need them...

BTW a Yamaha 8 would also work.

All mine have been 4 stroke and electric start.

Bob in Florida. R22 "NoKaOi 3"
