My whisker pole has clips on both ends,  and I use a cable to pull the clip open  In order to connect or disconnect the clew.  I have gown pretty good at opening the clip,  slipping it over the foot of the jib and slipping it up till it hits the jib sheet knot.  Once I got the knot,  I release the cable and the clip closes in the clew. 

After that,  I hook it up to the mast.  I almost never have to grab the clew to hook it up.
