The problem with using a pole with  clasps on both ends is disengaging the  
sail end while underway,  that's the whole reason for the spike, being able 
to  undo  it.

You still have to bring the sail inboard to  insert  the spike into the
clew.  Even Jennifer Lawrence can't  aim that  good.  Get a pole with clasps
on both ends and you'll  never lose  it.
