You shouldn't be having that problem.  You should get good suggestions from the other skippers if you explain what you do and what happens more fully.  The shrouds should minimize or mostly eliminate what can be side-sway of the mast.

That's pretty slick Ted.  I wish I had a video of me trying to raise my mast
with the upper shrouds connected to the inner stays instead of the outer
stays.  Lots of sweating and hopping about as the mast fell sideways. 

You have it down to a science.
