>From my experience I can share a few thoughts. One. The boom needed to be slightly raised above horizontal when pulling the sail out. I believe this allows the sail to exit the slot with equal pressure along its length from the top of the mast to the bottom. When the pull is not equal the sail can jam. I just used the topping lift to raise the end of the boom about 1 foot above horizontal and the sail always unfurled easily. Also be sure the boom is about 30 degrees to starboard to keep friction in the mast slot from interfering. Again, this represents my experience. My boat was an 87 with the original sail. Used this technique for 14 years and only jammed once or twice and that was when I wasn't paying attention to the above advice.

I am continuing to have an issue pulling out the sail despite following your advice to the T. I ensure that I'm on a port tack with the boom slightly to starboard and the boom slightly lower when I furl the sail. The sail has no issues furling, but pulling it out is a different story. It tends to get bunched up on the lower part of the sail when I am pulling the out haul. This requires me to go forward and give the sail a few tugs and push in the extra material that tends to get bunched up in the lower part of the mast.
