I forgot to mention that removing the rub rail will not give you a better
view of the hull deck join as the seal is below the rail rather than behind
it. You might try to use a tool with a hook to scrape out as much sealant as
you can and then patch it from below.
If you intend to do a complete rebuild of the join the you would need to
remove the rub rail and any screws or rivets at the join so that you can use
wedges to separate the join enough to remove the old sealant and give some
space to squeeze in new stuff. Then refasten the hull and deck mechanically.
For that you would use 3M 5200 or equivalent. Rummy swore by a sealant
available at Home Depot called N1 I believe. There is quite a bit in the
archives on resealing the joint properly but if the leak is only in one
place I would try the patch approach first as a complete reseal is a pretty
big job and replacing the rub rail can be expensive.

Subject: [Rhodes22-list] Green goop with leaks
Hey guys, looks like I may have the dreaded deck to hull joint leaks on my
recycled 1991/2013. I also have slight leaks at the bow pulpit through
bolts. It's leaking green goopy sealant along the port side. I can see it on
the white/gray carpet on the side of the port hull. I took off the bow
railing and plan to rebed the through bolts using west systems epoxy. I
started to clean out the existing holes by re drilling slightly larger holes
and used a dremel tool remove some of the core material. I feel pretty good
about the repair as there are lots of demonstrations on You Tube and various
boating web sites.
What is the best way to remove the rub rail to inspect the deck to hull
joint?
Cheers,
Ted
