[Rhodes22-list] stern flush mounted stanchions

I looked at my stern pulpit the other day and asked - why do I even need you? 
Is this heresy? Am I facing excommunication? 
Seriously. Has anyone taken off the stern pulpit - and has it worked out?
Are there sound arguments for keeping it?
