Rummy: While I don't need to remove my side ports at this time I recall trying to remove them on my '86 and it was a difficult process. With that in mind I'd love to hear how you discovered an easy way to remove them.
Thanks, Bob of the R22 "NoKaOi 3"

I too bought an '81 from Stan. I believe that my mine was the first that he used stainless on. The handrails were also SS. I would agree that the SS was a leap forward in terms of quality. Our '03 has the stern rail with the cut out for the ladder and the bends to accommodate the captain's chairs. This setup works very well. Although I loved the '81, Stan has certainly made many improvements. I continue to have the utmost respect for both Stan and Rose.

Rummy,
My '81, manufactured in
the Amityville plant and purchased from Stan
directly, had aluminum rails. They were
pop-riveted together and always
left a gray
stain on clothing that was dried on the rail unless I wiped
them
down constantly to remove the oxide.
They were a poor choice compared to the
stainless on my 1991 Rhodes.

I can't imagine stern rails made from
aluminum and not stainless. This must
have
been a retrofit by a very cheap owner at one time. The newer
factory
version of the stern rail has a
section that allows for easy access to the
stern ladder. I like to sit on the gunnels,
in fact I spend most of my time
up there
unless I'm massively healing and need a toe hold in the
opposing
seat. I often lean back against
the rail for support, but I can also
imagine
sailing without them. I say go for it and let us know what
you
think.
I finished
removing the side ports on RumRunner this week and found an
easy
way to remove and clean them if anyone
is interested. I have to clean the
hull
surfaces and then I will be reinstalling them with (white)
NP1. One of
the ports I removed had been
rebedded about twenty years ago with NP1 and
it was extremely hard to cut loose. With a
good install I'm guessing they
will last
the life of the boat and never need to be removed and
rebedded
again.
I'm
looking for an opening front port in good to excellent
condition if
anyone has a spare they would
part with. I broke the hinge on one of mine.
