Joe Camp and his buddy get the good deed of the year award for helping me
fix my broken mail sail yesterday in the sweltering heat. The problem was
just as several of you speculated, the tab at the top of the sail had torn
off its attachment. It turned out that the repair could be done without
removing the furling tube completely, it was pulled out just enough for the
tube to be turned to access the spot we needed through the slot in the mast.
The bracket that the tab had been attached to was removed and two screws
with washers were placed just below the tab through the reinforced part of
the sail and into the furling tube. Pictures are attached. The vice grip
pliers that someone had recommended were useful to keep tension on the sail
while the first screw was placed. Stan had recommended this as an
acceptable fix for the problem. One screw might had been sufficient, but we
decided to put in two just to be safe. So all is good and I have my boat
back!! I can't adequately express my appreciation to everyone on this list
and especially to Joe for all the assistance given.
