You will probably get a lot of conflicting advice so will need to filter them and make your own decision, but... I have trailered my boat on a Triad dual axel trailer for thousands of miles and only once did I take it off of the transom. I have never had a problem and I have the heavy 9.9HP Yamaha. However, when leaving on the transom mount I ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS tied a rope around the engine and secured it to the base of the rails; essentially taking a good portion of the engine weight off the engine mount. By distributing the weight across several points it greatly reduces the risk of something bad happening. All that said, the reason I have left the motor on the transom is 1) lack of room in the back of the vehicle; 2) the weight of the engine makes it a pita to take on and off; 3) I have the remote tiller mounted engine control so that adds another level of pita; 4) its one less thing to have to do when I get to my destination.
One other note. The rudder is easier to remove and takes some weight off the transom, but if you leave it on the transom, be sure to also attach a rope around it as extra support.

Subject: [Rhodes22-list] Trailer Advice
I will be trailering my Rhodes 22 from Edenton to Washington DC this spring on a new double axel triad trailer. The trailer experience is new to me and I would appreciate any basic advice on what to do and what to avoid. When traveling several hundred miles is it better to keep the Yamaha 8hp outboard on the transom or put it in the back of the vehicle? Any basic input and advice is appreciated.
