I have never had that problem and I don't use boots. Perhaps my sail has a
higher foot.
I let the wind carry the sail fully across the centre line of the boat
rather than try to pull it across with the jib sheet. I don't let the jib
sheet go until the jib had backed to the wind, then I let the windward sheet
go and draw in the lee sheet.

I used plastic tubes with caps. I think these are available from West
Marineor Defender. Or you can make them. I think Defender will even sell you
ones made from white ash.
