   Graham,
Yes that is the old style rudder head. It is a slab of wood or
composite material with metal plates. What is yours made of? It's
difficult to tell from your picture on my phone.
The newer rudders are of a sandwich design. Two outer panels with
sandwiched filler strips and no metal plates. I'm not on my computer
so I don't have a picture to post, but here is a link to a video of a
newer style gusset head. You can see a bit of the rudder in the video.

Are you guys still using the old slab type rudderheads like the one
     in

     Graham,
Some of the earlier boats used a wire "traveler". Here is a photo
     from my
previous boat, a 76 model. John Locke had the same setup until he
     added the
traveler track, which has already been posted. - Rob Lowe

     Joe:
When I originally bought my boat there was no traveller at all and
     the main
sheet block was simply attached to the pedestal stand bracket on
     the cockpit
sole. Later I installed a proper traveller that ran across the
     cockpit seats
immediately in front of the lazarette. That works fairly well but I
     like the
idea of moving it up and out of the way. Buying the rig from Stan
     is pretty
expensive from Canada and I would like to use the gear I have if
     possible.
The problem I see with attaching my track to a bar is that this
     might create
a twisting action that might play on the back stays. It looks to me
     like the
traveller car in the photo runs directly on the tube and this would
     eliminate the twist.
If anyone has a close up picture of the traveller that would help
     or if
anyone has rigged their own I would be interested to see what they
     did.

     Graham:
Where (how) IS your traveler attached? The standard R-22
     configuration
has two ss cups attached to the back the back stays about 16 to 24
     inches
above the stern freeboard. Traveler clips into these cups with snap
fittings. It`s tough to see in the second pic, as my right hand had
     the bar
securely in its grasp. (it`s a Freudian thing, I suppose) This is
     the old
version. Maybe some other Rhodies have pictures more definitive
     than this.
I have pasted the pics right in here at the message. Let me know if
     they
don`t make it to you. "Sail `em if ya got `em."

Thanks for the response but my question wasn`t clear. My traveller
     is not
attached to the back stays at all. I was wondering what is needed
     to attach
it there. I was wondering if I might take the track, attach it to a
stainless steel tube and then work out some way to attach the
     traveller to
the back stays. How are they attached now?

     Graham:
The changeover is best made while your boat is resting up from a
     long
season of sailing. I took the existing traveler off and sent it to
Stanville. There the General Boats craftsmen transformed it into
     the new
version and sent it home again, where I tucked it away till sailing
     season
then reinstalled it exactly like the old one. Then, "plop, plop -
     fizz,
fizz, oh what a relief it is," (AlkaSeltzer).
Moving the main from side to side in order to sail closer to the
     wind is
a breeze (pun always intended). The boom will stay right where you
     put it.
I like to experiment with it, play around. Hey, you`re sitting on
     your ass
anyway. Why not use the time to become friendlier with your boat,
     the wind
and wonderful combination these two things produce: you as a
     sailor. Ready
     about! Hard to lee!

What is involved in retrofitting the mew traveller to a boat that
     had the
old standard deck-mounted traveller? I have the split back stay.

     To the traveller troubled:
Stan`s new traveller design makes this operation a breeze and gives
     this
amazing boat another card up its sleeve. (That`s a metaphorical
     sleeve;
boats don`t have jackets with sleeves) I find myself using it all
     of the
time, compared to the old traveller, which I avoided unwrapping at
     all. My
best advice is to buy this item... Spend some money at GBI and get
     Stan out
of the natural food store and back into the business of building
     superior
sailboats. (By the way, Stan does have sleeves, and they`re loaded
     with
     surprise cards.)
