Jay,

The scupper (drain) connects to a tube that runs from cockpit sole through the bottom of the boat. The cockpit is self bailing. This means the drain (scupper) is slightly above the static waterline.

However, sometimes If you have a lot of well fed crew in the cockpit, you can have a tendency to have a small amount water enter up through the drain. A simple plug keeps too much water from coming up.

Take a good look down the hole. I had a water bottle cap get stuck in there one time and had to fish it out. I came back to the boat and she had about 6 inches of water in the cockpit. No harm no foul...
