At this point rebuilding the pump sounds like a wise investment. Something you can check though is to make sure pee hose line is clear. I get damn mud dabbers that will plug up the exit with mud. Stick a toothpick or pipe cleaner up through it to make sure it's clear. But regardless, at 15 years, a new water pump should be installed - rob

Okay, so I started the outboard a few hours ago. Turned over flawlessly with no adventitious sounds. Turned it immediately off and repeated. Same thing. So I'm going to chance a replacement of the pump and blow out the water line with some compressed air. The cost of the repair kit is maybe $50. A new engine $2500 to $3000. It did not pee either time, so we know the pump failed. We're just investigating on if the engine is still salvageable and reliable. This will happen late next week. I'll keep you posted. Graham, I hope to have learned not quite as hard a lesson as you did years ago. We'll see. Thanks everyone for your insights.
