Hank has the right idea. And you don't necessarily need to go up the mast
to lower the halyard. A 10' length of pvc pipe (3/4"), topped with a
suitably bent coat hanger (think upside-down V) secured by duct tape will
get the job done. If you're not tall & long-armed, you may need a little
move pvc. Good luck.
