Hi Peter,
About 4 years ago, Stan helped me purchase a Rhodes from an owner whose boat was in the Minneapolis area. I live in upstate NY and was a little concerned with trailering the boat that great a distance with a 2003 Toyota 4 Runner (with a V6). If my memory is correct, at the time U-Haul would only allow you to tow with their own trailers. I ended up doing this successfully with my 4 Runner. I am surprised that Toyota hasn't included the 4 Runner in the frame program.
If you are interested, Richard Beytagh has done many deliveries for Stan. If he still does this, I would recommend him without reservation. Stan can probably give you his contact info.
Best of luck with your new Rhodes. I sailed my '81 Rhodes in your area many years ago and I am sure that you will enjoy the variety of different places you can sail to along both the Connecticut and Long Island coastline. I would love to do that again with my current Rhodes.
All the Best,
DonIthaca, NY

Peter,
Hang in there man. I am sure you can rent a truck that can tow your new baby home. May be you can borrow a truck or suv from family or friends. Be sure that the truck has the proper towing capacity. There are a few guys on the list that have done deliveries for Stan. I'm sure one of them might offer their assistance for a reasonable fee.
There are lots of lock options for outboards each design has pros and cons. You might consider having two types of locks just to be sure. Also be sure your insurance has you covered just in case.
If you get the chance, take your boat up to Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. It's breathtaking scenery and the lake is enormous. I also highly recommend the Boston Harbor Islands. I used to launch in Hingham and explored lots of interesting islands during the extremely short sailing season.
Good luck and keep us posted.
Cheers,
Ted

I explained how I was going to be a real trailer-sailor, carting the boat to sailing destinations all over New England. Well, it turns out it is not to be, at least this year.

The good news is that they will replace the frame with a brand new one at no cost to me (so they say). The bad news is they consider the truck in its current state to be unsafe, and they won’t give it back to me until the new frame is installed. The really bad news is that there’s a six month backlog in the production of new frames.

The dealer may lend me a tow-capable truck for a week (they’re looking into it), or I could rent one, or I could have Stan arrange for the boat to be delivered. (BTW, the only place I’ve found that rents tow-cabable pickup trucks is U-Haul. Does anyone have any experience renting a U-Haul for towing their own trailer?)

I’m going to need a mooring, and there will be a bunch of new issues that will come along with that. For example, I guess I’m going to need some sort of lock for the outboard.

I’m just going to have to work out a few new things, and get used to the idea that I won’t have the boat at home to fiddle with between sailing trips.
