I like TSP (trisodium phosphate) for cleaning. It is a weak acid and a mild abrasive. It rinses clean but wont burn you or destroy your eyes if you get a splash. You can find it in the painting section at ACE hardware (etc). It is used for painting prep. I also use it to prep fiberglass for epoxy paint.
