I did not jack up the trailer primarily because the rig is so heavy and I was worried about putting pressure on the axle inboard of the Springholders until April 1. I figured tires were cheaper then an axle but may jack it up next winter depending on responses here. I have the single axle version. I do jack up my Buccaneer 18, which is a 500 pound boat on a lighter trailer. The benefit: The trailer is a 1984, on its second set of tires. The first set lasted over 20 years, with about 1000 miles of mostly local runs each year. It was stored outside on dirt part of the time, and inside on concrete other years, depending on my situation. It sees much less use now. ----- Alex Cole S/V Lark -- View this message in context: http://rhodes-22.1065344.n5.nabble.com/Winter-Storage-tp52700p52710.html Sent from the Rhodes 22 mailing list archive at Nabble.com. I have a couple recent experiences. Tohatsu makes the small Mercury and several other brand's small motors. The now defunct sailboat shop in Indiana (as far as I know the whole state) downsold me to the 6 HP sailmaster this spring. It was a good choice, with adequate power even in wind, a generator and amazing fuel economy. It is relatively low RPM on a larger higher torque prop. To my understanding a motor is blind to currents. It is hull speed over water that limits us, not speed over ground, so once it has power to achieve hull speed additional power doesn't help it move better against a tide, except to the extent you manage to power past hull speed. I did have trouble this fall with poor restarts and stalling when around expensive boats in marinas. After the season ended I took it to my redneck mechanic. He dumped the gas, idled it at various speeds for 45 minutes and found no problems. He determined that the high fuel efficiency motor and my tendency to sail til the last minute was my undoing. The ethanol sucked up water like brake fluid. If I wasn't too cheap to dump the old fuel Kentucky Lake would have been perfect. Stan didn't have an electric option last year. Pout. If we make it to the Abermarle in the spring I'll be sure to ask about it. I promised my girlfriend I'd NEVER make her go back to North Carolina in the heat of summer. Nothing beats a gated, secure storage facility for the winter. But if that's not possible, park the trailer in a well-lit area with its tongue facing away from the street. Take off the coupler. Remove small outboards and store them somewhere secure; lock larger outboards with security locks. Look up! Don't park your boat under overhanging tree limbs or near a steeply sloped roof. Keep water out. Shrink-wrap your boat or use a cover to keep snow and ice from filling the cockpit and damaging the gelcoat or through-hull fittings. Make sure all ports and hatches are sealed. Keep it dry. Leave the drain plug out so any water that does get in won't accumulate. Elevate the tongue to assist with drainage. Save your tires. Take the tires off and block up the trailer. Store the tires and lug nuts indoors. This deters thieves and increases tire life by preventing flat spots and reducing exposure to damaging ultraviolet radiation. I enjoyed watching you build the floor as well as the tour of your impressive shop. Last month I finished installing the floor in Agile. I used 1/2 in. plywood?? which I sealed with epoxy and then covered with sheet vinyl that I attached with contact cement. I also installed 5 large hatches to get below the floor. It makes for rugged, water resistant, non-skid and easily cleaned surface. I can only hope that the contact cement holds through the winter deep freeze. Of course it isn't very nautical but this time around nothing goes into my boat that requires maintenance. I have a classic mahogany boat where absolutely everything requires continuous maintenance and that is enough for me. In installing the structure for the floorboards I used 3/4 inch angle aluminium that I bolted to the side panels. Along with making new stringers, that? allowed me to drop the floor about 1 inch from the way it was before I started. That is not much but at my height every inch of head room is a precious thing.
