Agree with Peter and Gil (Hi Gil!).
If you are traveling on a weekday, try to time it so you are not doing
Tappan Zee (I287) to I95 N anytime near rush hour. There has been a lot
of construction around the Tappan Zee (they are building a new bridge -
it's pretty impressive) but the last couple of times we came through
there we didn't have much of a problem with traffic but I think we were
midday midweek going north and a Sunday afternoon going south. I95 north
out of New York often comes to a standstill on weekday late afternoons.
Not sure where you are catching the ferry but from north/central NJ (say
around Hightstown) to Hyannis MA is a little over 5 hours driving time
according to Google Maps - I'd plan on 6 or 7 in traffic.
All of these routes are easier if you have EZ-Pass. Keeps you out of the
toll lanes - and there are a lot of tolls in the Northeast.
Hope this is helpful. Have a great trip!
