My wife and I are in the beginning stages of shipping our well traveled R22
to northern Italy. * I thought that I would keep the list posted with
details and some photos of the process. Like everything in life we are a
bit late, we intended on shipping it over in early to mid June. It now
looks like the 28th of July will be the departure date from Baltimore. The
transit time to Livorno (near Pisa) is supposed to be between 15 and 20
days. It certainly is not an economic decision to ship the boat as opposed
to buying a small boat over there. But owning a boat is not a cold
economic decision. Heck, building the things isn't either, ask Stan.
One task is to trade my really nice trailer for a not-so-nice one because
the boat must be shipped on a trailer and then transported to a nearby
marina in Livorno. I will have to pay import duty on the trailer. The
trailer will then be donated to the sailing program at the marina. Hence
the desire for a "throw-away" trailer. Lucky for me Bob Lester is helping
out with the exchange.
Shipping cost to Italy on a Roll-on-Roll-off ship is around $4,300. There
will be some fees at the Italian end for sure. I booked a nice Air-B&B**,
the owner has a sailboat and is very simpatico. The cost was about $500
for two weeks from the 11th through the 25th. That should keep me there
for the arrival and the inevitable bureaucratic run around. The boat is
entering the EU under a TI, temporary import, which should give us 18
months in the EU/Schengen area before we have to leave. That will give us
plenty of time to sail to Sicily, leave the boat over the winter. We will
go back to our "home", a Catalina 387, where we will spend the winter in
the Bahamas. We will have enough time the next summer to sail from Sicily
to Croatia and then leave the boat in Montenegro or Croatia both of which
are not in the Schengen Area.
If anyone has any ideas or information that my help in this process, do let
me know. If I can answer any questions, again, let me know.
