That sounds like the best solution. I was in a rush to get the boat back in
the water so I took a small piece of Celtec and shot finish nails thru it
and mounted it to the mast head pointy side up. I haven't seen the Osprey up
there in the last 6 weeks since I put the boat back on the lift. So, this
temporary solution seems to be working so far.

A Davis wind vane with spike seems like the right long term solution.

Have you tried a wind vane with a spike? Works pretty good until they bust
off the spike.
