[Rhodes22-list] Canadian Rhodes

Stan:
On behalf of all Canadians and in particular the Rhodies I must apologize profusely for the shabby treatment you experienced with Canadian officials. It is truly embarrassing to know that such an iconic boat builder faced such ridiculous obstacles.

On the other hand, knowing that I now possess an early and bootleg copy of the R22 information literature is exciting. I figure it must be very valuable given its historic interest.

I remember that show because it turned me from a Canadianphile to a
Canadianphobe. I was at the show explaining all the new features on
this new US sailboat when the police came and dragged me off to some
gov. island where I was kept in dark until someone found time to tell me
what was going on. Seems I was accused of handing out free literature
brought into the country without paying taxes on it. There was no tax on
the boat since that was leaving the country after the show but they did
not think I would be able to retrieve the handouts. Never went back to
the Toronto in the water show again which I suspect was the plan.

We normally use 3/16". Don't know the specs but while hard, it is soft
enough to see a movement in the edges that extend beyond the cb cap when
sufficient pressure has been applied through machine screw tightening.
The kit comes with 50 machine screws, 50 lock nuts and 100 fender
washers for $200, plus bail money.

I would have loved to have bought one then but the selling price for the boat and trailer was $5500 and that was way beyond anything I could afford. I kept the write-up materials and brought them out to re-read frequently over the years. I found my used boat in about 1994 and considered myself very lucky to have found one. At that point I had been sailing for years and had never seen the R22.
