I use a surface mount to the cabin bulkhead only three screws, no hole, and I let the wires hang into the cabin. It has a quick release dismount.

I need the experienced advice of Rhodies who are a lot more comfortable with
drilling holes in their boat than I am. I have a small GPS unit (Dragonfly
5M) that I would like to mount someplace on my Rhodes 22. I originally tried
to find a way to clip it to the rail on my pop top, but can't find a
mounting unit to make that possible. (I use a bike mount for my iPhone to
mount it there and works well.) So, I guess the best option is to use the
mounting stand that came with the GPS and requires 3 screws into something
solid. I have 2 questions -- 1. Where do you suggest mounting the unit? 2.
How do I go about drilling 3 holes in my beloved Rhodes to mount this
without doing damage? The unit needs to be near the cabin as I have a cable
attached to plug into the 12 volt socket in there. Thanks for your advice.
