[Rhodes22-list] highest comfortable wind speed

I sail in Sandusky Bay (off Lake Erie, near Cedar Point, Ohio) and I have trouble with my genoa (I believe it is a 160) buffeting in winds as little as 15 knots. It does not seem to matter how much of the sail I have furled, even with only a small amount of it showing, it still buffets, and that seems to cause great drag. Can anyone suggest to me what my problem is?
Steve

Unless I’m the class wimp, i reef long before 25knots. Leaving dock in a
heavy crosswind is a bitch alone, But probably not different then any boat
of similar size not having a deep keel (trailerable). Sailing isn’t bad,
but I don’t show much sail and don’t like gusts hitting 30. If you get the
captains chairs they provide a great perch with the backstay and push pit
for support while you look down at the water. I’ve had bruises on my arm
the next day, but never felt like I would go swimming even if spending a few
hours in 20-25 knots in April. That’s with the main furled to show one 2
and the jib at the aft lower stay or less. If I’m fighting Lake Erie chop
my personal tolerance goes down. 55 in a squall is plain scary. I’d
probably look at a different design if I was somewhere like San Francisco
famous for strong winds.
Alex. Mostly sailing in Ohio.
