I bought a relatively new boat (2002) so I settled for a partial refit. I accepted the almost perfect original paint, but Stan?s crew shined it up amazingly. She got a fresh bootstripe, rubrail and bottom paint. The interior was refreshed. I wanted LED light upgrades to minimize current drain. Stan replaced the batteries as well as a faulty solar cell. Cabin cushions were new, the cockpit ones were gently used. The rig was new. I upgraded sails afterword. I probably would have been wise to do that on day one, but I?ve also been lucky in accumulating hours under heavy wind. Stan will give his honest opinion, not a sales pitch. I?ve met other owners, this group will do the same. These boats do get regular use in a lot of waters. If I bought a rough boat I?d have made many mistakes and false starts, despite having practice screwing up on my old 18 footer. I don?t regret sailing instead of inhaling epoxy fumes. My project cost would have been much higher than Stan if I figured the cost of not working while I worked on the boat. My options: New trailer. I have the single axle version, I don?t know which is better. I retrofitted LED lights for the rear, maybe they finally come with the trailer. I take a road trip each year to escape my puddle. Pop top tent. Essential for marina hopping, good for mosquitoes at anchor. Bimini top. I seldom use it unless my lady is along. The boat opens up wonderfully with the pop top up and the Bimini up. Marine head. Girls don?t like the can. Captains chairs (the best invention ever). IMF. I don?t have experience rigging lazy jacks to compare. I like in mast furling for evening sails, but singlehanded reefing in a squall can be exciting. I also kept a splash board with compass made by the prior owner. I?m very glad I bought it. Regrets. I didn?t have a bilge pump installed. I added that myself after a bird nest clogged my scuppers and filled my bilge during a downpour. Some lakes don?t allow gray water (galley sink) to dispose overboard, you may need to rig a holding tank if anybody checks. The galley pump failed after the warranty expired, but replacement is simple. I wasted time on a rebuild kit, a reminder why I had Stan do the original refit. The boat is heavy and has a lot of stays. One person can rig and launch, but it takes a couple hours. I think it?s a great coastal pocket cruiser and daysailor. The diamond board is good in thin water. Stan?s quality isn?t quite Halberg Rassy, but there are fewer zeros in the check and it trailer launches much better. It is significantly better then the mass produced boats. The storage (including putting totes under the seats) is amazing compared to most trailer launchables if you plan on cruising. I haven?t used the shore power. The decision to purchase a new (recycled) boat vs a pre-owned boat involves trading off money for your time and effort. A recycled boat is likely to be more trouble free in the first few years of life than a used boat will be. The work to bring the boat up to snuff has already been done and the labor and material costs associated with that have to be recaptured by Stan along with some margin for profit. If you are willing and able to do much of this work yourself you can save money by purchasing a used boat. Just realize that that you are making a commitment of your own time and material costs to do the work yourself. Only you can determine where your budget, available time, and recycling skill set balance out against a new (recycled) boat purchase. I decided to buy an older Rhodes and recycle it myself and I spent almost two years doing this. I learned a lot of valuable skills regarding boat repairs such as electrical, fiberglass repair, rigging,? carpentry among other things. After doing that, my wife and I spent a number of years just enjoying the boat. That said, recently when it came time to move up to our next boat I decided to limit my search to those boats that required less work up front. Remember almost all boats are money pits it just a matter of degree. I you decide to buy used, you can google "used Rhodes 22" and I'm sure you'll find lots of boats available. Alternatively, I'm sure Stan has less expensive older recyled boats to choose from. I hope my comments give you a few points to ponder as you narrow your purchasing focus. The plant and Stan still does great work! You got great advice below from everyone. Buy as much boat as you are comfortable with and get out there and sail!!! Assuming you live on the East Coast you can always bring the boat back and add features later. My first 96 Rhodes came with two opening hatches, a very old trailer and a pop top enclosure. My 99 came with two opening hatches, newer used galvanized trailer, pop top enclosure, bimini, and Captain Chairs. Over the years I have added new traveler, motor-rudder linkage and a 130 genoa which is much better for the heavier winds of the Southern Chesapeake. Stan has always given good advice and stands by his warranty and word. Be realistic with him when you discuss how you are going to use the boat and your budget. And have FUN sailing! -Mike S/V Ranger (99 Rhodes) Hampton Roads, Virginia On Sun, May 13, 2018 at 10:35 AM, Kim Wann wrote: > We are considering the purchase of a newer recycled Rhodes 22 from General > Boats. It?s not the kind of depowering tool like a quick release traveler dump when over powered and out of control. The main sheet remains the best resource for that. It is also handy to have the removable Delrin ends that allow the traveler to swing out of the way or be easily removed. Good luck with it. The groove in the furler seemed to go in a certain direction (clockwise). So that is the way I rolled the said. sail. It seemed to be much more resistance going against the grain Need feedback on this, PLEASE. Second question: which direction do I wrap the line on the furler? Clockwise/Counter Clockwise????? I need to get this part correct before I launch and raise the mast. All help and information will be greatly appreciated. I do realize this is something a Rhodes 22 owner only does every 15 or so years. Hey Stan, the new sail looks to be about 6 inches longer than the old sail I replaced. The old sail had a leader about that long on the top of the sail. The new sail fit perfectly to the existing hardware. With a new mainsail can I pick up 1/2 knot speed? LOL Thanks! Standing behind the mast looking forward into the mast, the sail goes to the left (port), while the furling line goes to the right (starboard). To state this another way, if you were looking down on the furling assembly, pulling the sail out will turn the assembly counter-clockwise, while pulling on on the furling line will turn the assembly clockwise. I hope this lets you get your boat put back together correctly. It?s time to get these boats in the water! If you think of the sail and the line as two lines to turn the tube, then they have to be wrapped opposite to function correctly. When you can, have the boom slightly to starboard as you furl and and unfurl your IMF Sally Sail main since, if mounted on the furling tub in the intended rotational position, it will come out cleaner (minimum resistance) through the IMF mast slot which, in races that start with the main not hoisted, will probably get you the extra 1/2 knot you are looking for. I race my boat once a week on a lake. I switched my 175 furling genny for a 135 furling Jenny because it was too difficult to fast tack the 175. Tacking quickly is important when racing. Like wise, adjusting the shape of the genny and the main is important. My main is a circa 2004 furling main. Adding a boom vang could also help to give you more main sailing area when off the wind. I have one that I?m about to add. There was some list discussion on how to hook one up last year. The difficulty is that one needs to easily disconnect it to use the the pop top. As I said in a previous post, quickly adjusting the traveler is important in racing so that you can get a good main sail shape after each tack. For cruising who cares. Adjust one item at a time and just enjoy the experience Joe Joseph Doucet 70 pumping station rd Ridgefield , ct USA 1-203-512-5629 > On May 28, 2018, at 9:00 PM, Chris Cowie wrote: > > Joe > > How often do you race? I was racing against a 25? keel boat with an experienced skipper and crew. I had neglected to arrange for crew because heavy rain had been predicted but failed to arrive. Needless to say, I came in second in both races due to screwing up some seriously good starts using my audio count down timer. Ahh, back to the traveler: it works great allowing a very fine control of the area of your main that really drives the boat. However, when a squall gust hits one needs to release the main sheet to avoid over driving the boat. If I had a heavy crew I could have used them to level the boat. > > I now have Stan?s original double Back stay traveler with my own > improvements available for postage. The start is the most exciting part of the race. 1. Try to start on a starboard tack if this looks advantageous. 2. Get the audio ?Countdown? timer for your iPhone. Set it for the time of the second horn/gun. This will give you an audio countdown of the minutes, then the seconds during the last minute. Be prepared to hit the line just after the start. When driving to the line You can adjust your speed with the Jib. If you have a boat up wind of you and you have overlap, then that boat is burdened and you can drive it windward to luff their sails. This slows them down. At the start you turn downwind first to gain an advantage. If you do not get a good start tack away from the fleet as soon as possible. Following the other boats is not a winning strategy because you will be sailing in disturbed wind. There are many strategies, which is what makes it fun. For example instead of tacking into the final dash to the line, try jibing. It will give you a higher boat speed out of the turn. I lost about ten minutes at the start trying to stay out of the way of the other boats as a newbie and have left plenty of room for improvement. I agree the 135 allows for more efficient tacking and I also like the ease of adjustment using the newer GB traveler. I hope to join the next race next Tuesday night. > > Christopher P.
