The situation has vastly improved thanks to a few changes I made! As a reminder, my boat is sitting on its trailer, but I was pumping a few gallons of water from the bilge every 3-4 weeks. It turns out the culprits were the drains in cockpit (water would go through the holes, then ?ramp? under the cockpit seats and eventually drip onto the cabin sole) and the support that is used to make a bed in the cockpit (the front one, which is screwed right below the companionway). Attaching a picture that shows both things. [Image] The other water leak was at the bow, with the hatch that was cracked and no longer sealed. I covered it up with waterproof tape : the leak has completely stopped, and I no longer have condensation in the v-berth. I purchased a solar vent as per Mary-Lou?s suggestion and it fits right in. I?ve only done a dry fit so far as I want to put some epoxy to protect the plywood and it?s too cold to do so these days. I used a router today to make a groove where the epoxy will go. The plywood is mostly dry but there?s a side where it?s wet. Not delaminated but it needs to dry before I can put epoxy. Attaching a couple of pictures of the work in progress. [Image][Image] Today, I found another leak. It?s pretty minor but I will look at fixing it anyway. I need to re-bed the black ?rail? that holds the hatch. Water finds its way along one of the screw, and drips from ceiling of the cabin onto the galley. Very pleased with his work and his advice. He is definitely the expert when it comes to boat trailers. There was an article in Practical Sailor about Michael Orro that one of you sent me. Gotta love "Da List". New coupler, wood & wheels/tires, lots of welding, upgraded/replaced the axle and tongue extension, switched to disc brakes and LED lights. Picture attached. You will see slight bulges in the rail where the plastic track spread from the screws. If I were to do it again I would pay careful attention to not seating the screws beyond the minimum that is necessary. They don't mention this issue in the installation instructions and so I didn't realize the problem I was creating until it was too late The rail gives very good protection. Installation needs to be done on a hot day so the vinyl is soft and pliable. I was able to do it alone but it was a struggle. What is almost impossible is to find the damned things. Part of the reason that the leaks are so hard to find is that the water evaporates at the leak quickly so you can't see any sign of the leak's source. One possible solution to this latter problem is to tape some paper towel below where you think the leak might be. If there is a leak it will show on the towel. As for painting the lazarette, I have found that Interlux bilge paint works very well. It is super tough, very smooth - which makes it easy to clean, applies easily and is less expensive than yacht paints. Any "bilge" paint should work from other marine paint manufacturers as well but I haven't tried them. Regarding the drains in the lazarette, yes, they are definitely on my list too. Not that there is a lot of water in there, but I would like the lazarette to be dry too, and eventually be able to repaint it. Any suggestion on what paint to use is welcome. Lazarette hatch, seat scuppers, main cockpit drain hose, swing keel pendant through hulls and tube, port holes, companion way door hinge, anchor line/dorade, chain plates, keel cap... Imagine my pleasure that ALL of those areas leaked on mine. ?? Everything (except keel cap) sealed with silicone so plan on replacing every 3 years if you stick with silicone instead of a polyurethane. I have had good luck with a butyl rubber for bedding as the whole deck ?seive? structure flexes. Very pleased with his work and his advice. He is definitely the expert when it comes to boat trailers. There was an article in Practical Sailor about Michael Orro that one of you sent me. My 1989 via 2018 recycled Rhodes came with a Triad single axle trailer and after getting the boat home noticed one of the hubs was smoking.. Wheel bearings were shot, which started the whole ball of wax rebuild. After pulling the wheel, I saw the seal was missing, the bearings were full of water (so it was steam not smoke) and the brakes were covered in oil. New seals (both wheels were bad), inner and outer bearings and lots of brake cleaner got that part done. The wheel cylinders for both brakes were leaking, so a rebuild of those was in order. After finishing that I filled the master cylinder with new fluid and watched it run right back out the piston seals. I thought about a rebuild kit but the surge brake head was in pretty bad shape so in went a new one. Brakes work again! Last time I put it in the water, I noticed the carpet on one of the bunks was rubbed through and the boat would not center properly when loading it on the trailer. On steeper ramps it would hit the cross bar at the front of the centering posts. Maybe I wasn't putting it in deep enough. Anyway I decided to fix all of that as well. A 10" roller between the posts solved the cross bar issue. New carpet for the bunks installed with SS staples came out really nice. Kudos go to my fiance, Brigit for all the nice detail work on that. The centering issue was a little tougher. After a lot of measuring and head scratching, I took two 4' pieces of pressure treated 2x6" pine and cut the ends on a 60 deg angle and the long top edge on a 45 deg angle. Then I drilled, counter sunk and installed 10 carriage bolts per side through the existing plastic pieces that were in place for the centering guide. Before attaching them to the plastic "boards" I wrapped them in marine carpet and stapled in place. Everything was bolted down using all new hot dipped galvanized hardware. I measured the finished project and have 1" to either side of the keel. That should center the boat nicely. By beveling the top of the boards, the boat can drop in as it's pulled out on steeper ramps and not catch on anything. We're off to the Keys in April and I now feel confident the trailer will get us there and back. -----Original Message----- From: "C Gabriel" <4cgabriel at gmail.com> Sent: Sunday, February 17, 2019 4:46pm To: "The Rhodes 22 Email List" Subject: Re: [Rhodes22-list] Trailer Rebuild This must be stuck in the outgoing mail queue of "da list". Seems like a long time ago. Now of course you need to do a similar log of your adventures and post it here. Those of us who live closer to home these days can live somewhat vicariously through the postings of people like you and Chris G. and Bill W. That said Tara has her own Facebook page where we post our cruises however short. Nothing since last fall but we do feel like we re reliving some of our adventures on the R22 and we encourage everyone to post their cruises here or elsewhere for evreyone to enjoy. https://www.facebook.com/TaraTRosborough/ Mary Lou On 2/27/2019 3:37 PM, Michael Corley wrote: > Thank you Mary Lou!
