Best way to understand it is to play with it and see what it does to the 
mainsail shape and how the boat responds.
 From the FAQ on the Rhodes22.org site (it was a paraphrase of a Sail 
Magazine article):

  * Light air - traveler car to windward, mainsheet eased to allow twist
  * Medium air - traveler slightly above centerline
  * Heavy air - traveler car eased, mainsheet tight
